Reflections on 101 things
So, my 101/1001 list expired today.  Looking back over the list, I didn’t do very well.  I completed 26/101 tasks.  And thats counting some which ceased to become relevant as completed. Why?  I think my biggest reason for failing to complete tasks was not looking at the list more often.  That allowed it to slip from my mind all too easily.  Then I’d miss an opportunity to complete an...

An Underbelly of Evil?
“A seaside town hardly conjours up images of evil spirits.  But a priest was so scared of dark forces in Portishead, Sommerset, he warned his flock to pray for it and fled to another town.  ‘I believe there are spiritual forces of wickedness in this place,’ Rev Clive Laws, 58, wrote in the parish magazine.  One churchgoer said: ‘Well, I don’t think there is an...

Books Etc. II
The Diamond Age, by Neal Stephenson This doesn’t count for my 101, as I have read Neal Stephenson before, but still, I was enthralled by the book and the way it is part science fiction, part fantasy. The book itself is set in a future world that was once ours and is now both different and very much the same.  The book itself is an extrapolation of what living in a relatively advanced...

Coffee~
So, I successfully completed #41 on my list.  I gave up coffee for the whole month of May, and then rewarded myself with a drink of the stuff this afternoon.   It was an interesting experience as it really emphasised to me when I drink coffee and also perhaps when I shouldn’t.  Whilst I will continue to drink coffee with people, or while reading in a cafe I am going to try and keep off the...

Update!
First: I really need to make these updates more often. But now onto the actual reason for the update.  I’m still off coffee, for quite a few days now.  I actually miss the ‘social’ aspect of it more (although I’m substituting hot chocolate mostly) and also taking a book down to the coffee shop.  Also, I’m now fairly regularly buying, and reading, the Guardian.  Which...

Day 2/31
…of days without coffee.  As per my 101/1001 (#41) I’m trying to give up coffee for a month (accompanied to a lesser extent, by also giving up tea, so as to avoid just turning into a massive tea drinker).  The first cup of the day, a regular feature for a few years now, is the hardest.  But I’m going to keep at it.  It’s in part to prove that old saying of “It’s...

Admitting Failure Is Hard
… but I actually managed to do that today.  To my supervisor, as well.  Hopefully maybe I can actually learn something from this.  Going off past experience this probably will not happen, but since it has too then perhaps it will. Recently I’ve really not been focused on my work, distracted by things I shouldn’t be distracted by, and things that I perhaps I have some reason for....

Books, etc. I
As part of my 101/1001, one of the things I want to do is read more authors.  I tend to stick to a favoured few, very rarely introducing new ones into that list, so I set myself a task of reading a new author at least every three months.  So, that brings me to my first book: The Glass Books Of The Dream Eaters, by G. L. Dahlquist Which is probably best sumarised by some of the blurb from the...

Snow, and a 101/1001 update!
So, first of all: Snow! Once more we have snow, and my view is a sea of white. Next, updates on the 101 things.  My pound coin idea continues to be a good one, although it seems to be the only one I have settled to regularly.  I’ve repeatedly failed on sleeping early and buy papers, for example.  This is something I need to rectify.  I’ve sorted out half my CD collection (the musical...

Another update on the 101! (and in general)
(Two in one weekend!) So, yesterday after the previous post/today, I assembled my CD shelves and got them secured in between my bookshelves (#66, done!).  This allowed me to put the pile of CDs on the floor on them, which has really made the room look tidier.  I’ve also (w.r.t #97, permenant storage) shelved a lot of my books from the old house.  The whole room is really starting to come...

Another few days, another review
Okay, so.  Now I’m over the initial “Wow, my 101 things” I’m starting to slip.  It’s a little discouraging that it has happened so soon, but it’s something I don’t intend to let continue.  I am still really pleased with the saving £1 every day.  It does remind me, however that was about the only thing I managed last week.  I forget to read a paper, I...

Blackcurrant Clafoutis
So, as part of my 101 things in 1001 days, I wanted to bake something new every month, so today, I baked a Blackberry Clafoutis (the orginal recipe called for blueberry) as we were having family round. Unfortunately, no pictures, as it was eaten straight away.  Still, on track!

101 things, 9/1001 days gone.
So, here is the first of what will hopefully be a number of posts on the ‘state of the 101’. I still have 101 things to do, so I guess technically I’m a bit behind, though I still have some thougts on the 101.  First, my save a pound a day was a great idea.  It really focuses me on the list, and reminds me of it each day. One of the most difficult tasks so far is the one about...

Joshua: haha. I agree. what happened today?
me: Today I have: debugged 3 programs, installed linux once, backed up the hard drive of a laptop before I try something risky to restore the file system, written several ruby scripts to help people and provided 1 pen.
Joshua: hahaha
Joshua: "pen, black, 1 count: £30"

me: I'd need to be a professional consultant to charge that.
Joshua: true

Narration: Captain Davis (played by Chris) and his squad. Seargent Hopwood (Lou), Corporal Smith (Me) and Corporal Briggs (Andy) have been give orders to travel behind enemy lines to destroy a munitions factory. Meanwhile, a diversionary attack will be made on the French lines and the Pyramid in the Jungle (used by the Egyptian mercenaries/cultists of sekmet) called the 'Temple of Gazi' and rumoured to be a place of great power.
Narration: The temple is bombed, the temple explodes. Something climbs out of the wreckage. Smithy summarises the events. This conversation followed.
Captain: So, 150ft tall humanoid thing.
Smithy: Sah.
Captain: Knocks tac zepps out of the air.

cosmocain: you never can have enough DRM. really! see... you can have a mp3 for 0.99 or a value added wma with protection against EVERYTHING. even listening! how great is that?
cosmocain: I, for one, would prefer the newest single by britney spears in a totally unplayable format.
chouonsoku: You, sir, are a visionary. What better way to protect our children against the auditory abomination that is today's pop artists? I feel that DRM is a wonderful thing, we simply haven't been using it correctly and to it's full potential.
